The law which Solomon Kentucky had come forth to proclaim (should the people so ordain it) was one that had been a long time coming; a law which was needed now more than ever before; a law from which the people could draw the strength they needed in order to go forth and do the work of the Lord and the Love on Earth; a law which would make them worthy of the sacrifices that Baby Jesus and Diana had made for them; a law which had long since been on the spiritual statutes of the beacon land across the Atlantic and which now finally was to be proclaimed here, in Great England, in Great Scotland, in Great Wales and across the water in the Emerald Country, that it might give strength and succour to the faithful.
Henceforth, from this time and place and across the whole land, Solomon Kentucky wished it to be known (should the people so ordain it) that every single person would by law and by statute be famous.

Wednesday's Warble

The Human League. Late 70s, early 80s. I used to listen to this band's first two albums incessantly - Reproduction and Travelogue. This track is from the latter. Very cool.

A Crow And A Baby:

A crow and a baby
Had an affair
The result was a landslide
The result was a dare
The result was a baby
Who wanted it all
Moved out of the doll's house
Moved out of the hall

With one wing on the town and a gleam in an eye of red
Said my father was a crow, now I want all fathers dead
Find the fathers of this world, treat them as a fatal foe
Put them in the deepest hole, then cover the pit with snow

With one wing on the town
And a gleam in an eye of red

I'm just trying to tell you what you'll come up against
If you venture from my side, if you think you're so mature
You will end up in a field, you will be someone's manure
Mushrooms growing from your back
Feeding some damn carrion bird
Do you want to contribute
To the corruption of the world?

With one wing on the town
And a gleam in an eye of red

A crow and a baby
Had an affair
My dream was the baby
The crow was your hair
Parts of me love parts of you
That at least is obvious
Give my baby back to me
You must see its only just

With one wing on the town
And a gleam in an eye of red
With one wing on the town
And a gleam in an eye of red
With one wing on the town
And a gleam in an eye of red

Dreams of Leaving:

Someone stopped the clock
When we should have started early
If we miss the morning meeting
Our lives will be in danger
Someone's trying to stop us
There is someone in our party
It is someone with a grudge
And they won't let us reach the border
Our lives are in his hands
We pay with Krugerands
The currency of pain to help
Us leaving
While back in our homeland
The ones who make a stand
Are taken from their homes and
No-one hears of them again
I felt I had to come here
I thought things would be better
The situation's changed
But I find I'm still resented
Someone wants my job
It is someone in this building
Someone's spreading rumours
And I don't feel I can stay here
I think I'm going north
And now's the time to leave
The people there they say
Are good to strangers
And if I do my best
And try to settle in
I'm sure I can be just like
Someone's neighbour
I'm sure I can be just like
Someone's neighbour

Tuesday's Tune

Song To The Siren. Originally written and performed by Tim Buckley and covered by many artists since, including Robert Plant. This version, by This Mortal Coil (aka The Cocteau Twins), is far and away my favourite. Beautiful song, beautifully sung.

On the floating, shapeless oceans
I did all my best to smile
til your singing eyes and fingers
drew me loving into your eyes.

And you sang "Sail to me, sail to me;
Let me enfold you."

Here I am, here I am waiting to hold you.
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you here when I was full sail?

Now my foolish boat is leaning, broken love lost on your rocks.
For you sang, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow."
Oh my heart, oh my heart shies from the sorrow.
I'm as puzzled as a newborn child.
I'm as riddled as the tide.
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or shall I lie with death my bride?

Hear me sing: "Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you."
"Here I am. Here I am, waiting to hold you."

A minority of one

I saw The Dark Knight last night. Didn't like it. Actually, it wasn't a case of not liking it as much as being bored by it. Crash Bang Violence Car chase Crash Bang Car chase Violence. *yawn*.
Yes, Heath Ledger gave a good performance as The Joker but I feel so sad that this was his last performance, the one he'll be remembered for - a completely evil psycopath with no redeeming features whatsoever.
Watching Christian Bale is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Same goes for whoever played Harvey Whatsisname. Gary Oldman had none of his usual lunatic spark. Michael Caine was Michael Caine, as always.
The storyline could have been interesting with the whole choice/chance, order/anarchy, hero/villain thing going on but, really, it was all just a pretty superficial backdrop for the special effects.
I went with my sister and brother-in-law (who both loved it) but, if I had gone on my own, I think I would've left well before the end because I just didn't care about how it was going to play out.

Yes. They must!!

:(

ST KILDA great Robert Harvey has announced his retirement, 20 years to the day after his AFL debut.
The dual Brownlow medallist fronted a packed media conference alongside his wife Danielle and coach Ross Lyon at Moorabbin on Wednesday morning.
He confirmed he will hang up the boots at the end of the season.
"I'm very happy and honoured to stretch my career out as long as I did," Harvey said. "It’s the right time for the club, the right time for myself."
In his 21 seasons, Harvey has won almost every individual accolade, but a premiership flag still eludes him. The Saints climbed to seventh with Sunday's win over Port Adelaide, and face a decisive battle with Collingwood on Saturday.
"This is the last opportunity to play finals footy – that's all I'm playing for," Harvey said.
“Our season is still alive and this is obviously my last chance at (the flag). You take me and Fraser [Gehrig] out and we’d nearly be the youngest list in the AFL, and I think that’s a great thing for the club, and we’ve got a great opportunity."
St Kilda players including Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball, Steven Milne, Lenny Hayes and Gehrig attended the announcement, and Harvey said he hadn't enjoyed breaking the news to them.
“It is always hard to come off 21 years at a place," he said.
"You try to get the words right and they don’t quite come out the way you’d like. It was the hardest thing I’ve done. Last week has been a bit of a roller coaster because I knew I was going to retire but when you actually say it and when you agree to say it, it is a different thing."
Almost universally regarded as one of the game's greats, Harvey has played 376 senior games, ranking him in fourth spot on the all-time list behind Michael Tuck (426 games), Kevin Bartlett (403 games) and Simon Madden (378 games).
The oldest player in the AFL, he will turn 37 before the end of the home-and-away season.
Harvey began his career against Footscray in round 19, 1988. In his 10th season, in 1997, he won his first Brownlow medal, although he considered it a "hollow victory", having finished behind the suspended Chris Grant in the polling.
There were no ambiguities the following year, when he secured back to back Brownlow medals, plus his fourth and last club best and fairest.
Harvey won eight All-Australian selections, three EJ Whitten medals for best on ground in state-of-origin, the AFLPA MVP award in 1997, two pre-season flags and was skipper for two seasons (2001-02).
He played in St Kilda's beaten grand final side in 1997.
In 1997, Harvey said: "Once you get to 25 you realise there isn't long left – especially when you started at 16. Your body gets such a hammering each week. You wonder how long it can hold up."
He underwent a knee reconstruction in 2001, and in 2002 a shoulder injury again finished his season early, but he bounced back in 2003 to win his eighth All-Australian jumper.
He has played under seven coaches, beginning under Darrel Baldock and outlasting Ken Sheldon, Stan Alves, Tim Watson, Malcolm Blight and Grant Thomas.
"I'm happy to have stretched my career out as long as it did," Harvey said on Wednesday.
Saints midfielder Lenny Hayes recently paid tribute to the Saints champion.
"He's an absolute freak – 21 years in the game, it's just amazing," Hayes said.
"I still remember having the posters on my wall when was growing up of him, being a midfielder.
"To come and just watch how he trains, and be a teammate of his, was a great thrill for me.
"I think mentally he's the toughest bloke I've ever seen.
"Just to be able to get up for games, and just the way he pushes himself at training and during games.
"He's just a freak."

The Pope visits Bondi

They've been having World Youth Day all week in Sydney, a huge gathering of Catholics from all over the world. Gridlock in Sydney. Herr Ratzinger, the Pope, was the star of the show but I think, on this occasion, even he was upstaged.
I saw this shot on the morning news and found the original on flickr.

Collaboration and Saints

This week's collaboration with Janet. The theme this week was favourite places in the home or yard. A book and a bed - what more could you ask for?

Meanwhile, last night the Saints played Hawthorn who are 3rd on the ladder and one of the two main favourites to take out the title this year. By half time I was ready to turn the TV off. The Hawks were winning comfortably and I thought a whitewash was on the cards.
But.
The Saints' second half was awesome! They kicked 12 goals to 2 and turned a 33 point defecit into a 30 point win. A fantastic team effort.
So, they're still hanging on to that last finals spot.
Go Sainters!

Update: Saints are equal 5th now.

1. If I could be a fly on the wall I would go to any lengths to avoid the swatter.

2. Jealousy is an emotion that can't always be suppressed.

3. When I see a shooting star my wish would be that I hadn't seen it because I only ever see them when someone's died.

4. I'd rather be alive than not any day!

5. Certain songs when I hear them make me wanna dance, sing along, hear more, turn 'em off, depending on what song.

6. If time were in a bottle I'd probably drink it.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to a drink at the Acorn (we don't go to the Tav anymore, tomorrow my plans include a family dinner for dad's 79th birthday and Sunday, I want to celebrate a Saints win!

Signs of Spring already?

Lots of Springy type stuff happening in the jungle - Daisies, Rhodedendron, Lilac. It's way too early for all this. It's technically slap bang in the middle of Winter still.

I even saw cherry blossom while I was out and about.

This week's collaboration

This week's collaboration was "secret" - that is, pick a photo from Janet's photostream and put it together with one of mine, without letting on which pics are used.
I did three diptychs and couldn't decided between them, so used them all :)

I just thought these two HAD to go together...

Saturday Photo Hunt

This week's theme is "support". This old trestle bridge at Selby is supported by some very old timber. It supports the railway track used by Puffing Billy, an old steam train that chugs through the hills. A very popular tourist attraction in these parts.
More Puffing Billy pics can be found here if you're interested.

Friday Fill-ins

1. Oh, I can't wait until I have a holiday.

2. That the light's not working is the first thing I see when I open my refrigerator.

3. I never leave home without my camera.

4. If I were a condiment, I would be a mutant pickle because I'm bitter and twisted.

5. The rudeness of people who don't understand that I don't have an unlimited supply of dollar coins for their laundry is really high up on my list of pet peeves.

6. The last thing I thought of before I went to bed was I think I'll go to bed.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to watching the Saints, who may or may not win, tomorrow my plans include work and Sunday, I want to be warm!

And the colour is....... black

Another photo challenge seen at The Snapery but originally from here.

Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo, originally uploaded by jsarcadia.

The Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo is a large (55 - 65 cm) cockatoo. It is easily identified by its mostly black plumage, with most body feathers edged with yellow, not visible at a distance. It has a yellow cheek patch and yellow panels on the tail. The female has a larger yellow cheek patch, pale brown bill (grey-black in males) and black marks in the yellow tail panels. Young birds resemble the adult female, but young males have a smaller cheek patch.

Age and Beauty

Weekly Words Challenge #43, hosted by Pickled Beef:

Ye olde Tash The Wonder Dog is in her mid 90s in human years. She still walks a few kilometres every day and was even seen to sprint a hundred yards or so a couple of weeks ago.

If I get up real close maybe I can see what you're doing...

My Dad, in the centre. 79 next week, still plays 18 holes of golf twice a week. My Mum, on his left, somewhere in her mid-70s, still works part-time as a teacher at the Little Yarra Steiner School.

I don't think I need to post any other pics to represent the beauty.

Wimbledon

Men's Final. Rafael Nadal won over Roger Federer, 9-7 in the fifth set. It was the best tennis match I think I've ever seen. Early on I thought it was going to be a whitewash for Nadal as he jumped out of the blocks and took the first two sets. But a rain delay in the third allowed Federer to get his act together and he came out and won the 3rd and 4th sets, both in tie-breakers. Some of the shots in that 4th set tie=breaker had to be seen to be believed. Just awesome shotmaking. The fifth set was really tight until Nadal broke Federer's serve in the 15th game. He then held his own serve to win 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7. I think Federer just ran out of gas at the end.
A magnificent tennis match.

The downside is that it started at 11.00 or so last night but didn't finish till 6.30 this morning.

Floating

This week's collaboration with Janet. I saw her flower photo (the one on the right) and immediately thought it would match up pretty well with one I'd taken last year. Both pics are titled "Floating" and that really was a coincidence.
