Diane is doing the blogathon, at least I think she is anyway. Just as well that I didn't sign up 'cos I have absolutely nothing to say today. This is my tenth day straight in the shop and I'm a bit over it at the moment. I haven't been able to get out and do the photography trips I'd planned, so I'm a bit annoyed about that. Plus, the weather is horrible. There's an icy wind out there to keep the grey skies company. :(
I'm not a happy camper today.

However, on a better note - Mum and Dad got a phone call from Clare and Georgia last night. So they're cheery.

This was taken out the back of the shop last night after work. I tried to find a spot with a less cluttered skyline but by then the colour had gone. :(
Later in the night was some fierce thunder and lightning. I thought about trying to catch some lightning shots but I was already tucked up warm in bed. And then it just rained again so I stayed where I was.

Just a short report from Africa....

Dearest Jules, Greetings from Uganda ~ but only for a little while as we leave tomorrow! The time has flown. Our goodbye from Katebo Village was amazing ~ I was very sorry to leave the class I have been teaching "P5" which is the equivalent of Class 5 but has children betwen 12 and 14yrs in it. There were 14 of them and we had a good time. They were very sad that I was leaving and that was heartbreaking: an amazing and fulfilling experience! We have come to Kampala and are staying with the Rev. Jim and his wife at their very fancy house (the complete opposite to Katebo Village!) and off to the airport early in the morning.

All's well. Georgia is fanging for a go on the computer. Tell Denise I got her email thanks. It will be hard to email from Switzerland but I should be able to find a telephone that works!

Sorry to hear Ma and Pa have not been well ~ please give them lots of love: and to everyone, human and beast!

Guy just in the shop had a nose piercing - not a full ring though. The two ends, hanging from the nose, had metal balls on the end. I desperately wanted to give him a tissue to wipe the boogers away.
Shame, 'cos he was quite a nice looking bloke otherwise.

It's supposed to be my day off. I was going to head off to the city and St Kilda and take some photographs. But Laura's uni timetable has changed and she can't work the shop today. So I'm stuck here. Bugger!

Dearest Jules,
Lots and lots of love to everyone!! Sorry about Soul's email coming first ~ I didn't get to the internet cafe that time, I don't remember why. So happy to hear that everything is well re: Tash and pussy cats. I'm very sorry I missed Dad's birthday ~ I am going to try to call tonight. We are actually in civilisation at a hotel ~ we went on Safari yesterday ~ saw various antelopes, warthog (one with baby which was very cute) and lots and lots of beautiful elephants. Then we went on a 2 hour boat ride and saw all sorts of birds and hippo and buffalo ~ one hyena. No lions or leopards, alas. It was a hell-trip of 6 hours in a bus to get there and then further time in the bus to search for animals (thank God for the elephants or we'd have all gone mad!!) Then to a dodgy safari park cafe for lunch (oh no ~ not more rice and beans!) then the boat ride which was fantastic. Then another 3 hour bus ride (hell) to this hotel ~ which seems like heaven, with running water, hot water even, sheets! Dinner in a dining room with chairs ~ amazing stuff. Breakfast! And the internet cafe. I had a shower last night and one again this morning ~ so luxurious!!!
There's so much to say and yes we have lots of photos ~ and people with better cameras than us are going to share too, which will be great. We have done so much and had such experiences ~ I love Africa: so unpredictable and quite a mystery.
Anyway, I had better go because folk are waiting and we haven't much time. Love you! Miss you! hope to talk to ma and pa soon.

I've just had someone from Allen and Unwin, the Australian publisher, on the phone trying to appease me. At least they know now. Still can't get the book though.

Alliance replied to my email. Their distribution policy is imposed on them by Bloomsbury and Madame Rowling. The "security" issue is behind it all, apparently. No, says I, making millions is behind it all. It's a marketing strategy, pure and simple. Works for them. Is highly detrimental to me.
Security! It's just a book when all is said and done, not the freaking Crown Jewels.

Well, well, my theory is blown...

Guy just ordered a Harry Potter - wants to support us and not the big guys. I wonder if I can get another copy now, otherwise I won't have one to read! I also wonder when I'm going to get them.

Edit: My supplier just called - he doesn't get his stock till next week sometime. He wasn't aware of this till he called the distributor today. The distributor is only supplying the major chain stores, who've ordered hundreds, for the official Saturday release. Small operators, like me, have to wait a week before we get our stock. That's their policy and they don't give a stuff about us little people. It stinks. I am a little bit more than annoyed.

After the warmest May on record we are now having quite possibly the coldest and wettest June ever. My room sprung a leak overnight - not a big one fortunately. Hopefully the boss will fix it asap.

Houston, we have a problem....

At the end of yesterday a lady was in looking at the cookbooks, of which we have hundreds. She went to pull one off the top shelf and the whole lot came tumbling down. The poor woman was mortified (whereas I was trying not to laugh). However, I'm not laughing this morning 'cos I've got to put the bloody things back. And the desk is swamped with books that came in yesterday, all waiting patiently to be priced and shelved.
Welcome to my day.....

Better news is that I've got some of Laura's pics on disc so I'll get around to posting them later on.

On a happier note - finally got an email from Clare in Africa....

Greetings at last! Here I am emailing you from an Internet Cafe in Kampala,
Uganda! Who would've thought! How's things? Please ring ma and pa (et al)
and let them know that everything is fine with us. We are both in good
health and spirits. The food is fantastic and the accomodation safe and
relatively comfortable. We are building a school room out of mudbricks ~
with very little technology: lots of sweat and the odd tear. The school is
over-run with hundreds of children of all ages (hard to tell who's what) and
they love us "Muzungus" ~ white people. Africa is an extraordinary place ~
well, the bits I've seen. Johannesburg is a sad place ~ the poverty, the
incredible rubbish problem ~ the 'walled suburbs' that the whites have
retreated to ~ the city has virtually been abandoned and is crumbling
slowly. Crime is a big problem (tho we were quite safe and have had no
hassles of any kind). We went to a place called "Constitution Hill" which is
the site of the old prison which held Mandela among others ~ appalling and
inspirational as they have used the same bricks to build an incredible
human-rights court with fantastic thought and insight and hope for the
future ~ we also met some inner city people doing great outreach work: but
money is the problem, as it is all over Africa (unless you're rich!! and
there are rich Ugandans too!) Botswana was another kettle of fish ~ much
cleaner than SA but with a lot of poverty also. The village of Otse was
quite incredible ~ it's desert country and they clear their blocks because
of snakes, so it was kind of bleak ~ beautiful bleak, as desert can be. We
went to the Kalahari for a night which was fantastic, the highlight of the
Botswana camp for me. The African kids we met there were White Sth Africans
and I found that disappointing as they were quite arrogant and a bit of a
'bad influence' one might say - Georgia had a BALL with them on the camp and
I was at my wits end most of the time!! There were great things in Botswana,
but the Youth Camp was not what I had hoped and quite a challenge with
smoking and stuff. Ah well. G and I survived. Still, otherwise I have been very healthy ~ some of us came down with flues and strange illnesses. Tell mum we are taking our malaria tablets!! I have met some amazing people ~ Africans. Uganda has a
different vibe all together ~ it is also very poor, but vibrant somehow and
very lush and green. The village where we are staying is very poor : the
fishing part on the shore of Lake Victoria in particular: and many many of
the adults there have HIV. It is a huge problem. Many of the children at the
school we are helping to build come from the fishing village and either are
or soon will be, orpans to 'the virus'. The children are like a swarm and
very very friendly. There is something incredibly beautiful about African
children. Many of the adults I have met have been very striking also. On the
first day of work I met a farmer called Matthew and he helped me carry
bricks for a while ~ a very handsome man!! I could find a husband and one for
Georgia 10 times over! We saw some traditional doctors in Botswana called
"Sangormas" and they invited us to a celebration where they communed with
their ancestors: FREAKY!! amazing stuff.

AAAAAAARRRGGGHGHHHHHHH!

I figured out why the camera was misbehaving - I'd inadvertantly flicked the switch on the lens that locks the focus (or something) so that's sorted. But, in the process I hit a wrong button somewhere and lost all the party photos. I could cry!

I am so fucking annoyed with myself now. Stupid, stupid woman that I am.

What a weekend!

The Medieval night was a great success. The pumpkin soup and mulled wine were real hits. However, I nearly came to blows with one supid woman who tried to take over my kitchen - that's just not on, dear. People around me thought I showed great restraint in the face of overwhelming provocation! Hehe, it made for some good laughs later on.
The rest of the night was excellent - people all sat down together for dinner and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I took some photos, which I haven't even looked at yet - if any are worth posting I'll do that later. My camera was being very disobedient so I put it away quite early on. Also, I didn't want to have it out after I'd had a few drinks. So there might be some pics later. I know that Laura took some too so I might get some of hers as well.
It took three of us three hours to clean up on Sunday morning!
And then we were off to the Tav to celebrate another friend's 60th birthday. Later in the evening a few people came back to our place and we had leftover soup and beef.
I'm a touch weary this morning!

I really need something else or the guests will all leave very quickly if I'm there in just a hat! I could hire a costume but it's an expense I really can't afford at the moment.

Things I like beginning with L:

1. Led Zeppelin - the band that inspired me to pick up the guitar.

3. Lord of the Rings - my favouritest book ever. Don't mind the film version either.
4. Legolas - a character from said book, portrayed pretty well by Orlando Bloom. ;)
5. Liverpool - I'm planning to go back for the first time in 2010.

This fella was in the back yard. See lots of rosellas, parrots, lorikeets up at Mum and Dad's in Seville but this was the first one I'd seen down the hill. He's a youngster still - you can tell by the grey baby feathers he still has.

Heretic

By Bernard Cornwell. Book 3 of The Grail Quest. Thomas, the English archer and hero of the story, strikes out on his own to find the Grail. Along the way he takes up with a condemned heretic, gets excommuniated, captures a castle, deals with his evil cousin and narrowly avoids the plague. I won't say whether he finds the Grail in case you decide to read it at some stage.
Cornwell has a very easy, straight forward style which makes for a relatively quick read. I think his research is pretty good though. He throws in historical detail without you really noticing and I didn't ever have to stop and think "hey, that's not right".
So, if you're looking for some historical fiction with a good storyline, without too much depth, but which isn't a soppy romance saga then you could do worse than Bernard Cornwell.

Harry frigging Potter

I've had a couple of enquiries as to whether we'll be stocking Deathly Hallows. I could but it would not be worth my while. The major bookstores, K-Mart, etc., will have heaps and will be selling the book at cost. My sister works at Dymocks, a major bookshop chain in town. She told me that they're getting 1500 copies in her particular shop and are selling them at wholesale price. Most of them are already sold on pre-orders anyway. I just can't compete with that sort of volume and it's pointless to buy in a few and then sell them for no profit. Depressing.

Edit: The guy I buy new books from was just in and I relented and ordered a couple in - to keep in reserve for when the big stores run out.

Overseas visitors...

Mum's brother, my uncle, and his wife are over from England. They've been mostly up in Brisbane visiting their son but have come down to Mum and Dad's for this week. Brian and Ann on the left, my mum and dad on the right.

 

Inspiring....

Saw this over at EBC and thought it was good enough to share. A young guy in Malawi has built a windmill out of scrap and is now able to generate enough electricity to light the family home. It's a great story.

Oh yeah, I forgot.....

Saints won again on the weekend. Two in a row, woohoo! Finals are not out of the question yet.

Dingo

Australia's native dog. They're still out there in the wild but usually further north than this. There's a colony on Fraser Island (off Queensland coast) which is the purest of the lot due to no mixing with domestic dogs.
Some people shoot dingoes unfortunately. They eat livestock and have been known to attack, and even kill, humans who get too close. Personally, I think that's the humans' fault, not the dogs'. If you know it's dangerous you don't go up and try to pat it!

Healesville Sanctuary - today's tourist spot.

I went for a stroll through Healesville Sanctuary yesterday. Native flora and fauna only. Twice a day they put on a birds of prey show which is always amazing to watch. The Barking owl, however, nearly took my head off as it came in to land on its perch behind me. And again when it took off again. The other pics are the obligatory kangaroo, wombat and koala.
